See Michele's new project! What's yours?

A Note from Michele

Thank you for all the kind words, emails, cards, and visits from those I've been fortunate enough to see, when I've been able to be in the store. I foolishly thought that this would be a linear journey; it is proving to be anything but. “High hopes, low expectations” is my husband’s motto, and I'm living there these days. With that in mind, you could say my latest project is a season behind. I am choosing to look at it as ahead of the game for next winter. Check it out below!

Follow along as I slowly work through relining my favorite winter coat. It is a lovely 100% cashmere coat from Dayton’s Oval Room, found a number of years ago in a thrift store.

At the time, the only thing it needed was a button boost. I stacked the fun striped buttons inside the originals and suddenly it no longer looked dated.

I carefully removed the lining and deconstructed just half to use to create a pattern. It's worth taking the time to make a paper pattern when working with slippery lining fabric. Accuracy on the front end prevents the headache from a lining that does not fit. Leaving the other half of the lining intact will help with reconstruction for an interesting vintage design.

And now the fun part! Many of you have heard one of my favorite mantras - No Boring Linings!! I had a gorgeous piece of heavy silk satin this coat deserved as its lining. It took a little creative piecing and fabulous pattern matching (no one will ever notice). I did pink the seam allowances to reduce fraying. Your garment will last longer if when pinking you cut just enough to produce the zigzag pattern, barely narrowing the seam allowance.
