4 fun folks, one big Day for You

Hi, Treadlettes, Treadlers, and sewists of every persuasion! It's Emily, and I have a question...

When was the last time you devoted an entire day to sewing?

Don't know the answer? Mark your calendar for February 17: it's another Day for You! You’ll hear stories of designing for the stage and see gowns that have graced the dance floor. You’ll learn a technique for making buttons that’s hundreds of years old, and watch as history comes to life in all the layers of a 19th-century costume. You’ll learn tricks for sewing better, faster, and smarter that will revolutionize your sewing practice. This is a day to be inspired, to try something a little different, and to think about sewing in a new way.

Space is limited, so sign up today!

We can't wait to spend the day with you, find friends, fun, and fabric, shake off the February funk, and learn from four fabulous presenters:

Bob Graff is an experienced costume designer who’s worked as far afield as New York City and as local as the Guthrie Theater, the University of Northwestern’s drama department, and Open Window Theater. This creative and generous teacher will draw back the curtain on the design process, finding sources of inspiration, and the differences between dressing a character on stage and making everyday garments. Bob will give a draping demonstration and have a selection of his fabulous costumes on display!

Katherine Buenger has earned the title “Renaissance Woman” from Treadle owner Michele Hoaglund due to her skill in myriad crafts (among them weaving, sewing, and making intricate Sámi bracelets and Dorset buttons). And Michele isn’t the only one who’s noticed her: Katherine has received many State Fair ribbons over the years for her handiwork, often combining her skills to create something made completely from scratch. She will get our hands busy making Death’s Head buttons (popular in the 18th century and similar to the Dorset), a style of button made by wrapping thread in a cross or X design over a plain wooden button.

Treadle’s own historic dress expert Elizabeth Merritt is back for another demonstration of the fascinating art of getting dressed in the mid-19th century. If you attended A Day For You in November, never fear, Elizabeth will model an entirely different ensemble!

Julie Kendle is a professional dancer (think “Dancing with the Stars”), illustrator, and sewist. She will share her experience with dance costumes and – of course – have many of her bespoke frocks for us to see.
