SUPPLIES FOR TREADLE CLASSES

A supply list will be mailed to you upon registration. ALL required supplies MUST be brought to your first class, unless otherwise noted. Students receive a 15% discount on all fabric purchases for the duration of your class.

You can find all supplies for sale at our store unless otherwise noted. Our staff will be happy to assist you in gathering your supplies!

Most classes require the following BASIC SUPPLIES:

  • sewing machine in good working order (and sewing machine manual)
  • bobbins
  • sewing scissors
  • tape measure
  • straight pins
  • seam ripper
  • 6" seam gauge
  • washable fabric marker or chalk pencil
  • one package of assorted size Universal sewing machine needles

NO SEWING MACHINE?
Treadle has a limited number of sewing machines available for use during class on a first come/first served basis. Please reserve when you register.

Basic Sewing Series Classes

BEGINNING APPAREL SEWING - supply list
  • Basic Sewing Supplies (see above)
  • 1/2 yard cotton muslin
  • Please budget $25 - $50 for project supplies. Final pattern and fabric selections will be made during first class. Cost will vary with project choice.

MAKE IT SEW - supply list

CONTINUING ON - APPAREL SEWING IN THE REAL WORLD - supply list
  • Basic Sewing Supplies (see above)
  • pattern and fabric of your choice (if you need help selecting a project that will stretch your skills, but not overwhelm you, contact your instructor at the store)

HAND SEWING BASICS - supply list
  • Basic Sewing Supplies (except sewing machine)
  • 1/3 yard 100% cotton muslin or broadcloth, white or light color
  • hand sewing needles (small "sharps" are preferred)
  • 100% cotton thread in contrasting color
  • thimble
  • beeswax
  • one 2-hole or 4-hole shirt button
  • one hook & eye set
  • Please pre-cut your fabric into twelve 6" squares IN ADVANCE

HAND SEWING – CLASSIC TECHNIQUES - supply list

Serger classes

BASIC SERGERY & BEYOND - supply list
  • serger in good working order
  • serger manual (VERY IMPORTANT - download online if you don't have one)
  • ALL tools and accessories associated with your serger
  • Four different colors of cone thread (helpful if it matches the four colors on serger tension dials)
  • small scissor or thread snips
  • seam ripper
  • straight pins
  • Sample fabrics will be provided along with a child-size cotton knit tee to construct in class and take home or donate

COPY READY-TO-WEAR - supply list

DARN IT! - supply list

    • heel & toe thread (available at the yarnery)

CHOP YOUR SWEATER - supply list
  • Basic Sewing Supplies (see above)
  • 1 to 3 old sweaters
  • thread in coordinating color(s)
  • optional: additional fabrics, notions, or trims; we will discuss options in class
  • Notes:
    • for swants (sweater-pants) you need a large sweater with big sleeves you can fit your legs into
    • for mittens, you may wish to make your sweaters into felt in advance. To do this, machine-wash 100% wool sweaters in very hot water several times, until desired felted texture is achieved

BEAUTIFUL SEAMS AND HEMS - supply list
  • Basic Sewing Supplies (see above)
  • 1 & 1/2" yards 100% cotton broadcloth or muslin - white or solid light color
  • thread in contrasting color
  • blind hem presser foot for sewing machine
  • 1/8 yard lightweight fusible interfacing
  • 1 package narrow (1/4") double-fold bias tape
  • optional: pinking shears
  • optional: 1/4" quilt-piecing presser foot

ZIPPER SUCCESS - supply list

  • muslin - yardage dependent on pattern chosen
  • pattern: a shirt, dress, or jacket you would like to make. If you have more than one possibility, great! If not, get help choosing in class. Patterns should have design lines that allow for fitting. For example, a shirt with darts and set-in sleeves is a better choice than one with dolman sleeves and a loose fit.
         (All sewing will be done outside of class)


SET-IN SLEEVE SOLUTIONS - supply list
  • Basic Sewing Supplies (see above)

  • 2 blouse or dress patterns with set-in sleeves
  • If you have a pattern that you have been struggling with and are frustrated, please bring it!
  • If you have a sleeve pattern that fits you well, bring it!



PANTS FITTING - supply list
  • blue painter's tape (or other repositionable tape)

  • ruler or yardstick

  • roll of tracing paper at least 24" wide (also called "bum wad") - available at Wet Paint

  • pattern recommendations (NOTE: you will not be making the whole garment, but using the pattern as a basic blueprint for learning modifications):

    • If you look for a different option, your pattern should be a classic, fitted shape and have either princess seam lines over the bust OR both vertical and horizontal front darts

HISTORIC SEWING: CORSETS AND COSTUMES - supply list
  • plain muslin for making mock-ups
  • Any historic undergarments (such as shift, corset, pads, hoops, or petticoats) that you plan to wear with your project.
  • Pattern and fabric for your desired project. Not sure? Contact Elizabeth at the store for help, or bring ideas to the first class to discuss.

ART QUILTING WITH SUSAN - supply list

ONE OF A KIND QUILT - supply list

  • "orphan" quilt blocks, screen prints, photos printed on fabric, cross stitch squares, large print fabric (8 1/2" squares are ideal or larger pieces that are multiples of 4" like 16 x 20 or 12 x 16), whatever!
  • 1/3 yard each of six to eight coordinating fabrics for piecing or a fat-quarter bundle of dyed fabrics
  • Note: yardages are not given for borders or backing

  • self-healing cutting mat - at least 12" x 18"

  • four 1/3 yard pieces of quilting cotton in light, medium, and dark values
  • 5/8 yard coordinating fabric for backing and binding


FASTEST QUILT IN THE MIDWEST - supply list
  • Basic Sewing Supplies (see above)
  • 1/4" quilting foot - REQUIRED (generic low shank feet available at Treadle)
  • 42 different coordinating cotton fabric strips 2 1/2" x width of fabric (or a jelly roll)
  • 42 squares 2 1/2" solid coordinating cotton fabric


PILLOWS & CUSHIONS - THE BASICS AND MORE - supply list

BONNIE'S BAG - supply list

  •  Two canvas complimentary fabrics - 5/8 yard each. (Please wash and press before class)
  • Two 7”  nylon zippers for outside pocket and inside pocket
  • One 16” zipper for top closure
  • Thread for sewing and top stitching
  • 12” webbing or canvas strap for side handle (1” - 1 1/2” wide)
  • Matching bias tape or 1/2 yard of a third cotton fabric to make self-bias (optional)
  • Pattern and instructions will be provided in class
  • Optional: if you prefer to cut your fabrics with a rotary cutter, please bring your own cutter, mat (MUST have your own mat) and clear gridded ruler

Kids Classes

KIDS BEGINNING SEWING

  • 1/2 yard plain cotton muslin for practice sewing
  • For pillowcase: 3/4 yard of cotton fabric and 1/4 yard of coordinating cotton fabric
  • For drawstring backpack: 1/2 yard of cotton fabric; 2 yards of ribbon
  • For tablet stand: cotton fat quarter
  • Small amounts of felt for hand sewing projects
  • Threads to match


KIDS ADVANCED BEGINNING SEWING

  • Fabric and pattern for projects will be chosen and purchased in first class

KIDS AFTER SCHOOL SEWING CLUB - supply list

  • Pillowcase students (Beginners) will need 1 yd. of cotton fabric and 1/4 yd. of a contrast cotton fabric and matching thread
  • Returning Students: Pattern will be supplied by instructor for a $3 fee. Fabric and notions can be purchased before or during first class
